Around the World in Eighty Days is an adventure novel by the French writer named Jules Verne, first published in French in 1872 and was then called ” Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours”.
In the book Phileas Fogg of London and his French valet Passepartout attempt to go around the world or circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a bet of £20,000 pounds an equivalent to £1,798,872 in 2019 this wager was set by his friends at the Reform Club in London. It is one of Verne’s most acclaimed books and was later to be made into a film.

World Partners Directory – At La Giraudiere we are constructing a World Partners directory of friends and partners where you will find information on every country in the world. The directory will be categorized by continents and then by the countries of each continent. Upon each page you will find information concerning the theme of that page and also an article which will refer to a link between France and that country. We are hoping to publish the full directory by the end of 2022.

Around the World in Eighty Days is probably the most famous travel book ever written and it was written during difficult times for France. It was during the Franco Prussian War in which its author, who was also facing difficult times, had been conscripted as a coastguard, he had no money, he had recently lost his father, and he had recently witnessed a public execution which disturbed him deeply.

However, despite all this Verne was not deterred and was so excited about his work on the new travel book. The advancements of the 19th century had opened the possibility of rapid circumnavigation of the globe and the prospect fascinated Verne. In particular three technological breakthroughs occurred in 1869-1870 that made a tourist like around the world journey possible for the first time ever: The completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in America (1869), the linking of the Indian railways Suez Canal (1869).
